We are delighted that you have chosen to make Mount Holyoke a part of your college search. Mount Holyoke College was founded in 1837 by Mary Lyon. Her vision was to provide women with an education that was comparable to what men were then receiving at the Ivy League schools. Today, MHC is a fully residential campus situated on 800 acres, with a world-class equestrian center, two lakes and access to an 18-hole championship golf course. The College is home to 2,100 students, 23% of whom are African-American, Latina, Native American or Asian American. An additional 15% are international students, representing over 75 countries. All this makes for a lively learning environment! Mount Holyoke classes are small, with 56% of classes having an average size of 15 students and 27% having 10 students or fewer. Our curriculum emphasizes tradition and community, while responding to technological developments and to society's ever-changing needs.

MHC is part of one of the oldest and most dynamic consortia in the country. The other schools in the Five College Consortium are Amherst, Hampshire and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A fare-free bus system, the Pioneer Valley Transport Authority or PVTA, takes students to classes, extracurricular activities and social events at the other schools.
